Dr. Anastasios Papalazarou MSc, PhD
Nutritionist

Dr. Papalazarou has been a dietitian since 1996 and has his own private, clinical practice in Athens, Greece. He specializes in weight management and his approach to weight control focuses on cognitive behavioural modification techniques as opposed to a model of following a strict diet. Being Greek, he believes in the great value of the Mediterranean diet/lifestyle, values of which he tries to pass on to his clients as well.

He is a spokesperson for brands that are aligned with his nutrition philosophy. He frequently makes guest appearances on TV and radio and writes articles for print and web media. He is also the co-host of “Beautiful Life” a weekly, TV health show that airs on Skaitv channel, on the top 3 rated channels on private greek television. He also has a strong academic background holding two MSc and a PhD degrees in nutrition.

He has been a scientific associate of the Harokopio University of Athens since 2011 and he is the primary investigator of the Canadian limb of the MEDIS study.

DIAGNOSIS

is a key component in a holistic approach to the patient and it can be achieved in 3 steps:

1.Obtain a medical, nutritional and behavioral history
.  A detailed past medical/surgical history, food allergies/intolerances as well as food preferences are recorded in order to create a successful, personalized diet plan. We also discuss any dysfunctional behaviors, that result in overeating.

2. Body composition measurements.  
The main measurements required include estimation of basal metabolic rate, daily energy balance body fat content and indexes such as waist to hip ratio.

3. Estimation of the level of motivation.
It has been well demonstrated that the stronger the motivation, the higher the chance of success in losing and maintaining weight loss.  

Therapy / Weight Management

The modern approach to weight loss and obesity is personalized and has 2 main components:

1. Design of a well-balanced diet plan. This should provide all the necessary nutritional elements needed for proper human function like vitamins and minerals. Nitrogen balance, defined as the amount of protein needed to protect muscle .mass, should also be maintained.  We used to think that slower weight loss was associated with long lasting outcome, but recent studies have shown that rapid weight loss can also be a feasible and healthy option, especially in highly motivated, obese individuals.

2. Modification of our nutritional behaviour. Changing our way of thinking and feeling about food is critical in our attempt to lose weight, otherwise it is similar to filling a bottomless basket with water.  It is simply pointless.  The first step is to identify the dysfunctional behaviour, for example eating in front of the TV, and attempting to break or swap out the unhealthy connection with healthier habits. To this end of breaking bad habits we apply tools such as self- monitoring, targeting, self-evaluation, all scientifically proven to help us change our attitude towards food.

Initial Consultation (60 minutes)
Your initial consultation will consist of a one-hour discussion about your health concerns, weight management goals and your lifestyle. We will also take your body fat and anthropometric measurements. Once we ascertain your medical and diet history, we will work with you to create a personalised and balanced diet plan which is based on your preferences, your lifestyle and the key principles of the Mediterranean Diet.

Follow-up Consultation (30 minutes)
Once your Initial Consultation is completed and we have set out a plan for you, we will encourage you to have additional half-hour Follow-Up Consultations to discuss the sustainability of your long term goals and help you achieve what you set out to do. The discussion will include the opportunity to ask questions and get the answers you need so we can provide valuable knowledge to assist you in reaching and maintaining your desired outcome. This will also give you the chance to learn how to make therapeutic changes to your lifestyle.
